I've been told that it's a seed bug, but it doesn't look like seed bug pictures I see on the Internet.

This is a seed bug, but it is a species recently introduced to North America. It is Rhyparochromus vulgaris (Hemiptera/Heteroptera: Rhyparochromidae); see http://tinyurl.com/yad8nav for an image and http://tinyurl.com/yct5b24 for an article on this bug (but where the genus is misspelled as "Rhyparochromis."
