Here is a picture of the eggs turning yellow. I am told they need to be brown before the seeds should be removed. I am going to have a zillion seeds if this works. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Our Summer weather has been so changeable I can not imagine what the Fall is going to bring. If anyone is interested in seeds, please let me know so I can add you to the list. JB
Easter Egg plant seeds
can you tell me a bit about the plant? it sure looks interesting to say the least
Check out this link: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2017/.
That is where I found out my information. It is a fun plant and I thoroughly enjoyed the different comments it brought from my friends and customers. I doubt if it has any other use other than a "fun" thing. It is calledEAster Eggplant or Solanum melongena.
and the "egg" is seeds??
If you have any to share, sure, I'd be happy to adopt them!
The eggs are supposed to have seeds in them when they turn brown and are dried. I will keep you posted because they are making me crazy. I am completely taken with these silly plants and I want to be able to grow them. A New challenge. LOL
I also would like to try some. Let me know when you are ready.
Dirty and Withad you are both on the list. I will keep you all posted on this forum or I will send you Dmails. I am hoping I can do this. LOL I looked this morning and some are still yellow and others are still growing and white. I must have two dozen eggs on the bushes just now. So fun. JB
what i do is when they turn yellow like that i pull the eggs off and let them turn brown inside in a paper bag because we get frost here before they turn brown and so far they have germinated for me just fine and anyone who has chickens will LOVE this plant it looks exactly like chicken eggs lol love this plant ihope this helps
moretz, thank you so much for telling me that. I must have two dozen eggs on these plants and some are yellow. I have been worried they may rot with all the rain. O.K. so if I pull the yellow eggs, put them in a brown bag, where do I put the bags....closet, refrig (NO) or just let it sit in the regular house temps. Oh God, I am so excited. I can finally pull those eggs. Yahoo. Thanks again.
room temps but make sure it dont get any sun at all, it might take them a couple of months to try out but just keep checking on them ok?the seeds will be tan not black ok?when you see them starting to turn brown(the eggs) then crack them open on a paper plate or paper towel and let them dry out the rest of the way i hope this helps?
Perfect.....I will take in my yellow ones today and pray the white ones do not die on the plant before they turn yellow. Frost will be here soon. When do you plant the seeds? Do they need to be kept cold or warm for a few weeks, just some questions I have been wondering. I wish this was all written down someplace. I am keeping all of this info you are giving me in a file so I can refer to it. Thanks so much. I would love to have these to sell for Easter.
Are they edible? Very cool plant, JB!
OMG NO! I would not want to eat them. There is also a FRIED egg plant and they look just like fried eggs. I saw it on the Plant file of DG. I wrote to the person who had seeds but never got a reply. I would love to raise those too. I am such a goof, I love strange things like that. Pagancat, if you want some seeds let me know. I will put you on the list.
I just cut the yellow ones and they are in a brown paper bag on my dining room table. I am like a mother hen waiting for the chicks to hatch. LOL
I'd love some - let me know when and I'll send postage on, 'kay?
JB, if you still have some of the eggplant seeds, I would love to be on your list. Thanks, Linda
I have no idea how many seeds are in an egg, but I am sure I will have plenty to share. You are both on the list now.
I wrote to a place in Australia to see if I could buy a plant or seeds of the Fried Egg Plant. It is so funny and I would love to be able to give it a try. If anyone comes across any place where we can buy or trade the Fried Egg Plants please let me know. JB
Well... I'm actually coming up with 2 different plants - one is a camellia relative, so it's a shrub, the other is a poppy that is native to California; Romneya coulteri .
there is about 50-75 seeds in one egg
Sheryl,
The Fried Egg Plant is Gordonia, Fried Egg Plant Polyspora axillaris. I am still trying to find time to do more research on it to see if I can buy some seeds or plants at someplace other than Australia. .Seeds would be o.k., but I am not sure the plant would take the trip. They are like trees....the flowers look like fried eggs. LOL You can read about them. I will get back to you later when I get home from getting my flu shot with some links. Later. JB
LOL - from what I'm reading, the taxonomists are really having a field day with this poor plant! Did you go to Camellia Forest, or whatever it's called?
I searched Gordonia, well, I found everything from a tiny bush to a very large tree. All are called Fried Egg, so you are correct, there is a lot of confusion. The Camellia Forest is an example for sure. They are all in the Theaceae Family and many are grown in the South swampy areas. Oh well, it was a good idea while it lasted. LOL. I am going to still keep looking for seeds just for the heck of it. JB
Sheryl, did you read the article by Phil Dudman
http://www.thegardenguru.com.au/factsheets/19_gordonia.htm
That was the one that made me want to get it.
Ah, *that's* what got you. Stay away from those Aussie sites, lol - we'll have you trying to grow Eucalyptus, Eremophilas and hard boiled egg plants...
Sheryl, too late, two years ago I had a crop of eucalyptus that was tremendous. It wintered out and was fine and got so out of control I took it all out. I had euc to cut and dry and sold some. I had fun with that and I still have a few plants I stuck in the corner of the hedgerow just for the heck of it. LOL. Love those Aussies. JB
Ha! I *knew* it!
O.K. Wise one. Hugs.
Back atcha!
I worked so hard yesterday I feel like a truck hit me today. Not good. So, I am going to play hookie today and do as little as necessary to get me thru the day. I think I will play games on facebook today. Sounds like a plan.
My eggplants must have another two dozen eggs on them still white and growing. They have a little jaggy thingy at the top where the stem is. I am having such a blast with these eggs. The little purple flower that preceeds the eggs is very simple and pretty, then to think something so complex as the egg grows from there. Amazing.
I fed the cats and dog, now I am going to have some breakfast, read my email and then if I feel creative I have some crosses to decorate for the cemetery. It looks like it might rain. I must feed and water the birds before I do another thing. Off I go. Hugs.
JB I have some " Pumpkins on a stick" seeds coming. Would you like to try some, Eggs and Pumpkins might make for an interesting breakfast (hehe)
OOOOOH! What is Pumpkin on a stick? SURE, I WOULD LOVE SOME. Thank you for thinking of me.
Pumpkin on a stick?? ok. . would like to see pix's of that...
Yes, Yes!
I tried to add a link but couldn't do it. I went to DG plant search and typed in "pumpkin on a stick" the second listing has pictures of them.
withad
could i get some? what could i send you in trade? plmk and thxs
Oh I love them. I must have some. Do you sell or trade? I can order from the Seeds of Change is you do not have any for sale.
Not for sale, I'll just send you some when I get them. When your "EGGS" hatch you can send me some of their seeds.
THAT IS A DEAL! Hugs.
I have a question, does anyone here ever sell on the MarketPlace? I have put up several items and the problem I have is that people will join DG for one day, order, never pay and are gone. I have no clue what the heck the problem is but I have only had four orders and only one was legit. It is so discouraging. I have one pending again now. This person joined the day she ordered and I have not heard since. I will eventually write to her and ask for payment and then cancel when her deadline a set is passed. Grumble Grumble.
JB, look around at some of the other postings on marketplace. Some will tell the outside-of-DG folks that they need to be able to check a D-mail in order to get payment info or some such - I think they don't understand about being members, etc.
Thanks, I really began to think it was me. I will check it out.
