Someone whose opinion I trust suggests this is Verrucosa arenata, arrowhead spider. With an agreed second opinion, I'll submit to BugFiles. I've never sen one here in MD before- but usually AVOID walking through webs!
CLOSED: Verrucosa arenata second opinion
I believe that this identification is correct - see http://tinyurl.com/ydtk7z8 for an example. Please bear in mind that there can be considerable variation in the color and shape of the dorsal marking of these spiders.
I agree, definitely a Verrucosa arenata. Matches this one very closely: http://bugguide.net/node/view/37036
We have a page for it in BugFiles here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/1838/
and would love to have your image added,
Kennedy
Thanksm suunto and kennedy! I am happy to add it to Bugfiles.
