I found this spider had built a web from some flower planters to a hummingbird feeder after a rain storm. I snapped some pics first than I sprayed it's web down with water and off my deck. I didn't hurt it, just removed it. I didn't know if it could hurt the hummingbirds that come around and wasn't taking a chance. The spider was big and beautiful, but I have to admit gave me the willies. I didn't notice it's web at first and when I was checking my flowers, stuck my head into it. I also have a large planter I use as a deck pond and the spider had connected its web to a tiny floating plant in the water.
From the photos I see here I'm wondering, is it also an orb spider? Is this the time of year they're seen the most, because I haven't seen any until now. It almost looks like a crab, but no pinchers. I keep checking my deck to see if it comes back.
CLOSED: ORB SPIDER?
This is indeed an orb-weaving spider (family Araneidae); likely either an Araneus or Neoscona sp.; all orb weavers are harmless to humans.
