This is an orb-weaving spider (family Araneidae) in the genus Neoscona, possibly Neoscona arabesca - see http://tinyurl.com/nthr9w for an example. There are several species in this genus (as well as in the related genus Araneus) that can have very similar color patterns and thus be difficult to separate in the field.

the pattern on their body is really interesting to look at...
