This spider is in my front garden. What is it? Looks nasty! It is approximately the size of an old silver dollar.

This a harmless (to humans) orb-weaving spider in the genus Argiope, namely the banded garden spider (Argiope trifasciata) - see http://tinyurl.com/2t6xhx
