Do I need this vine?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I think I may. I just hope it can live with not much humidity. Anyone grow it? Stictocardia macalusoi

Shoot, I found a big one of it today. You know I am going back in the morning unless someone tells me NO!

I wonder how it differs from Stictocardia beraviensis.

I hope it can live inside in a pot all winter.

This picture belongs to Dinu. I think this is what I saw though the one I saw was not in bloom.

Hawiian Bell....

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

It's beautiful!

I'll chime in with my experience. I believe what you have there is S. beraviensis. I had one that went COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTROL. I strongly recommend you keep it in a pot. The flowers are beautiful, but in my case (this being subtropical Southwest Florida) the vine grew as much as three feet a day and threatened to take over my yard if I wasn't there to hack it back at least twice a week.
So be warned.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

It did have lots of shoots twining up. It was in 3 gallon pot and was very full.

I do no think it would winter over here so I would have to keep it in a pot to move it indoors in winter. I just wonder if it would be warm enough here. We stay pretty cool, in the 70s in the day in summer, 50s at night.

It was labeled Stictocardia macalusoi. I will have to check the leaves of S. beraviensis to see if they are the same. Not many pics of Stictocardia macalusoi online.

Sounds like it would be a fight though to keep it in a pot.

Does it flower easily, Dutchlady?

Here is the leaf. Did your S. beraviensis have similar leaves?

Thumbnail by Kell

I think your leaves might be a bit more ridged than mine were. I just looked both varieties up in the plant bible and the blooms of the S. beraviensis are paler in color, a soft red, whereas the S. macusoi is said to have 'scarlet' flowers. So you probably will be able to tell when it blooms.
Zone 9 is given for this plant, so you would have to protect it in the winter, yes, and I also do wonder if it will bloom satisfacorily for you in your area. 70 during the day is not very warm...

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

You could always loan it to me for the summer, it gets plenty warm enough over here for it to bloom. Then I'll give it back to you for the winter since there's no way it would have a chance with my frost! LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Would I get bloom visiting rights?

LOL Liz. It roots easily I have read so you could have your own. I am just now deciding if I shoud go back and get it. It was $48 and I have been spending a fortune on plants this month. And I mean a fortune. So I am thinking how can I dare spend another penny and then another side of me is saying what is $48 more compared with all you have spent? Get it.

Thanks Dutchlady for all your info.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It doesn't even like zone9. it hates cold, anything below 60F and it starts freaking.

I would advise against it at that price.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

and besides, we know the answer to the title of this thread.
It should read, Do I WANT this vine? LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL No, it should be titled How sick am I?

But the question is Rj, could it live in my dining room and bloom? The guy selling it told me it is a houseplant and it does not need a GH. I had some doubts. LOL

I didn't leave yet to buy it, I got sidetracked.

Yes, the price is high for what might be a total loss even if it thrives, it may have to go if it gets so huge.

People would think I am loaded, they do not realize I buy nothing but plants. Also pots. I do like pots too. LOL All my control is gone.

It is never a houseplant (what are people thinking). Don't buy it - buy something else. For me it wasn't worth the hassle which ultimately is why I got rid of it.
I have things that are invasive and I keep them because they are worth it; this wasn't one of them.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I have to agree, it is tempermental enough outside, I can't imagine it liking it inside, and if you wanted to try it, there are cheaper ones around. It's also a pest magnet. You know me, I love vines, but that one got taken off the christmas list because it was beyond high maintenance for me.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

OK, I am cured from lust want. Thanks you two. Had it been blooming when I was there it would be home already! I was saved!!

I did get this vine though when I was there. My 4th one. So where were you 2 when I needed you before I reached for my wallet? LOL In the past I abused them, this one I am going to treat with nothing but love.

I saw a large one vining all over at the Huntington GH when I was there a couple of years ago and fell in love.

The leaves are just so entertaining.

I agree on the leaves. Now - what is it?

Glad we were able to save you, that plant would have strangled you....

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Kell you said All my control is gone. Said in Jest since when aren't you?? ROTFLOL

I have the same problem. I want one of every plant and one of every color. This addiction is so out of control. I can't spend much on SSD but oh my God I want so many different things I see. I am lusting over this plant you changed your mind against. LOL It is gorgeous but I will be good also.

I need a better back and so much more to trade in a RU. lol

Love and Blessings,
Sandy

That other vine is gorgeous. Wish I was your neighbor so I could visit your yard. And anytime you have to have something you can send it here and still have custody and full visitation rights and I can just be its guardian. LOL

Dandridge, TN(Zone 6a)

Dioscorea discolor dark

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

It is beautiful

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sandy, I can't decide if wanting everyting is good or bad. At times it is torture but it is fun too! I literally dream plants most nights. My husband says my mind is stuck there and keeps repeating like stuttering which is why I am forever dragging some plant home. I have a feeling Dutchlady1 too has such needs. LOL

WOW Rj, I was googling and up came this http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/rjuddharrison/2950/

Then I saw your Beaumontia Grandiflora
http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/12985/

I have only seen 2 growing here. I tried to grow it once but it got frosted. I have never seen it for sale here. Susie - Calalily had given me my only one years ago. Did yours survive zone 9a? I see you have Dioscorea discolor too. Yours lived outside fine? Shoot, I must be doing something very wrong. I thought I frosted that one too.

Yes, lakesidecallas, a Dioscorea discolor. Though I had not heard it was dark. Is the regular one all green? Thanks for supplying the name.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Kell I have the same problem. I think it is good when they are beautiful but after I cart them home and one dies or with my little dog attacked and had surgery and so much to to with repotting right now it is bad. But I know I won't stop as it is not in me not to have one of everything and one of every color....And you know how many hibiscus are new every day? I know you do. I got 12 Plumerias 3 months ago. I can't wait to see blooms next yr but if I don't find time to fertilize I won't have any.

My late DH would say where you going to plant that and my answer was if there is one postage size piece of ground left it will be full. Well I have a lot of grass I can still dig up. It is a bad addiction but I can think of ones that are alot worse. I don't think I ever want cured......well I guess when I run out of places to plant I better seek help or sell and by some land....Wow the latter sounds like the better idea. Help I need to stop,,,,,,No don't help....yes I need help....not paying a therapist as I can by so many plants for the amount they cost.

Blessings,
Sandy

Oh I have been to RJ's and I just drool. It is so wonderful.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Kell, yes you do want one of these..I have mine growing in a pot...lol

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Nadine you are no good at all. LOL

Lets see a pic! PLEASE

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Nadine may I have a piece of it?

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I got mine back in August of this year. I will be potting it up in a larger pot before the weekend is up...lol..I will take a pic of it when i get back home Sunday morning..I am going to flowerjunkie's house to fix up the wooden fence that fell during H.Ike on her property..

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That is so nice of you to help!

Has yours flowered yet?

Kisses to my Daiseymae

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Yes to Daisymae and it is really nice of you Moodene but you are such a sweetheart.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Kell,
Yes the Grandiflora and Murtonii have both survived into fairly giant vines.
So far the Murtonii has only bloomed in spring, although it is suppose to bloom more often.
Ironically the Grandiflora needs a cold spell for it to bloom, so our zone is somewhat ideal for it as it gets cold enough, but not too cold.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So the grandiflora blooms more? Shoot I need it now. LOL Anything that has grandiflora in its name makes me want it even more.

Look
http://www.rareflora.com/beaumontiamur.html
How can you not want such big white bells? I had not even realized there were 2 with big white bells.

Rj, you are so smart.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

no, it's the murtonii that is suppose to bloom more, but have not seen it happen, in fact this spring was the first bloom the vine produced.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks Rj!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

RJ is so creative. I just love to wonder around his yard. Ohhh and at night he has the greatest creativity with all kinds of lights. The trade at his house last July was Great. I love going their with the other DGers. He is a such a great Host.

I would love to meet you one day Kell. It would be a real blessing. I love all my DG family. :o)

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

How's your stamina holding up Kell? Still resisting temptation???? I had to laugh when I skimmed this thread. I kept waiting to see where you said "oh what the heck" and went and bought it. LOL I am proud of you if you have resisted the temptation.

patty

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I know Patty! I totally expected her to ignore us and buy it anyway...lol, I probably would have

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

It is funny how you say that Patty and RJ. Even my 7 yr old DGD asks my opinion and does the total opposite.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You guys know me so well. LOL If I do not return to that nursery I will be OK. But if I go back, all bets are off. LOL

Yesterday I was out and about with another DG gal. We went to one of my favorite nurseries in Half Moon Bay, a lovely coastal town. I saw an agave I wanted. But my new motto is RESTRAINT. So I bought NOTHING!

We went on to a couple other places plus a great lunch at my favorite restaurant there. I have this day out down to a science. LOL

We also went to a place where you have to spend a minimum amount. I stopped at the bank to get the cash just in case we hit paydirt. Well, we did not get anything there either, the few things we wanted did not add up to the minimum.

Then my friend left for home and I what did I do? I sped back as fast as my dirtmobile would take me to that first nursery and not only bought that incredible agave but 3 other plants as well. I could not be good even for 1 day. I so suck.

Today I am off to Brisbane to pick up some succulents I bought online. And then I have to stop at a couple nurseries if I am going that far. lol. I still have some cash left from my stop at the bank. And when it is cash it is like free money to me. Does not count as real. Wouldn't you hate to be married to me?

It feels like fall here the last 2 days and I do not know what I am going to do with all my tropicals and all my succulents. If Tom does not put up my hoophouse this year, I will be singing such a sad tune. I better stay making him dinners.

It all sounds VERRRRY familiar

^_^

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

The only thing that prohibits me from the dirtmobile buying is there is noooo more room. I'm like one of those guys on an airplane that's full, spinning around looking for a seat, except in my case I'm holding a plant looking for a spot.!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Dutchlady. I have seen some of your lovely plants, so I know you identify!

That is when you appreciate when plants die, Rj. LOL.

I actually felt intoxicated today, I saw so many great plants! And of course I found a few that had my name on them. I am going to chain myself inside for a few weeks. I am so broke.
