Need guidance with collecting MG seeds....

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

It appears that my MGs are finally forming seed pods..... :)

What is the most efficient way to harvest/collect MG seeds, and how do you tell if the seeds are mature before the seed pod opens?

Thanks!

Glenda - OH MY! Aren't those blues beautiful!!! Is that Heavenly Blue that you have on your gate? How pretty!!!

The pods will turn brown and feel brittle when you squeeze them slightly. Not too hard, just to feel the texture of the seed pods. Here is a photo in PlantFiles of the seed pods and the seeds from Heavenly Blue: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/221423/ I hope that helps give you an idea of what to expect at seed harvest time. :-)

I agree with Becky, beautiful blue blooms.

Hi
I am new to MG's but recieved a free pack with cereal, not anything special but DD and I just dropped the whole pack on the ground late in May.
New gardens here and we just do the best job of planting we can and hope for the best especially with new things.
This is what August looked like.

ge1836 - Welcome! Your Heavenly Blue vines look marvelous, too! I like that birdhouse almost hidden in the vine! Is the vine just growing up the Birdhouse post? What a lovely sight! I agree with you that Glenda's entrance is such an eye-catcher!

The vine is growing up a spruce tree.
It must be a very hardy variety.
I have ordered seeds for a purple one and hope it will grow on another tree along the same garden.

Thanks everyone, they make me smile every time I go into my garden. :) .....I just found out that Wednesday night and Thursday night it is supposed to get down to 32 degrees where I live. I'm afraid that they will not live long enough to go to seed. :( I'm going out of town and won't be here to cover them up to protect them from frost. ....I'm really bummed. :(

Glenda - Do you have a neighbor you could ask to cover them for you until you get back or the weather warms up?

hope you can cover
