I posted this on the Vines and Climbers forum, but thought I would try here as well. Maybe someone will have an idea what may be wrong with my "Patio Tree" Wisteria. Just to be clear, these are the things I know are NOT wrong with it.
1-Too little water (It's in a bed that's watered 3 times a week for 10 minutes
2-Too little sun (It gets 5-6 hours of sun a day)
3-I don't think it gets too MUCH water. It's in the same bed with a Scheffelera (sp?) tree, a Tea Tree, a Plumbago and a Gardenia that are all thriving.
4-Poor soil. I put nicely amended soil in the huge hole I dug for it.
I'm not sure whether it needs acidic soil, in which case that may be the problem. I just don't know for sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I paid probably too much for just one plant out of my work plant budget. If this doesn't work out well I may have a difficult time convincing them to spend money on the things I want. (This was my only request for my Spring plant purchase and I spent $60.00 on it)
Sick Wisteria
Wisteria sinensis? Ours died when we planted it here (it was growing in a pot in La Costa), so I'm no expert. The recommendations I find call for "slightly" acidic soil.
Hi,
It has some sort of salt burn...it may have been from fertilizer or from the terrible water that SD has. When I had Wisteria I let them dry out considerably between waterings....they are surprisingly drought tolerant when established.
If you loose your Wisteria, I have a ton (okay not a real ton), of seeds. My Wisteria are very prolific in producing them. I will dmail photos when I find them.
First, I'd try flushing the roots out with distilled H20, like andymaycen suggested. You might be able to save it. My soil is acid, and probably why my Wisteria do so well. Now that they are established, they don't want that much water. They also bloom out of season. At least they do when the weather suddenly cools, then warms up. Ask Weegy, she saw a bloom on my Wisteria on Labor Day this year.
LMK about the seeds.

I've had four different sources suggest that it may be getting too much water. I may have to relocate it. The bed it's in is filled with things that need regular watering. Evidently, the Wisteria needs to dry out between watering. I think I'll wait 'til next week to tackle that project. I have a perfect place for it. I can flush it when it's out of the hole and "acidify" the new soil I plant it in. Hopefully it'll survive and thrive in its new home.
Thanks everybody
Randy
Heat damage ???
I don't think so Mike. It's surrounded by plants that would be more prone to heat damage and they're all thriving.
I've come to the conclusion that my first assessment was probably right. It has the look of something that's over-watered. I was not aware, until a couple of people have suggested, that Wisteria do better when they can dry out between waterings. This bed does not and nothing else in there needs to.
