David Liddle Has Passed

David Liddle passed away Saturday night.

Rest in Peace, David.

What a tremendous loss.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Iris and the family.

(Zone 1)

Oh my goodness ... so sorry to hear this sad news, sending prayers to his family and friends.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Likewise, Linda. So sorry to hear this....

Shepherdstown, WV

How very sad.

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Really sad news, prayers for the family & friends.

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

OMG, this is so terrible. RIP, David!
So sad, and such a loss to the hoya community.

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

I am stunned. I did not even know he was sick. It was only a couple of months ago when I asked him a question about my order, and he replied very promptly. Does anyone know what happened - very tragic news.

Doug

Pittsburgh, PA

A poster on another forum said he had a normal day on Saturday, 9/19/09, went to bed, and was found dead on Sunday morning by his wife; apparent heart attack...Does anyone know how old he was?

It is very sad, and for me at least very shocking, news...I thought of him as fairly young and healthy...never saw this coming...deep condolences to his family...

Shelley

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

I searched Google to see if I could find his obituary, but nothing came up. I searched images for his name and found some photos that might be him. Since I've never seen him, I don't know for sure. The man in the photos looked to maybe be in his 50's or early 60's.
Mike

Shepherdstown, WV

I got the impression from Epiforums that it was quite sudden.

Shelley, which forum were you reading?

I don't have a clue how old he was.

Kelly

How very, very sad. He will be missed by many people in the world.

Rest in Peace David.

Christine

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Was David a DG member? If so, what was his screen name?

Pittsburgh, PA

Kelly---It was on this forum...at the top under "Announcements"--

hoyasrus.egetforum.se

Mike---I did the same thing--searched on Google and came up with nothing...I think the photos you're referring to were of the "other" David Liddle...

Shelly...you have written the URL incorrectly....can you please put it correctly?

David was a relatively young man...50's I am going to say. I spent a week with them about 5 years ago. Charming man...very funny...big man, too. Iris Marie has run the business before and I reckon she will continue.

Very very sad news!

Carol

God has a new garden expert. Heaven's gain our loss. My respects and prayers to David's family.
May you receive comfort.

Carol---hmmmmm, I cut and pasted that URL from the website...don't know how to do it any differently.... sorry...

Shelley

P.S. Any possibility this news is just an internet scam? Has anyone confirmed the news with David's wife or from another source? (always hopeful)...

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Here's the link, but it looks like it's basically the same conversation we have going on here. http://hoyasrus.egetforum.se/board/david-liddle-has-passed-away-t46.html

Knoxville, TN

What a loss. I am thankful that I had the chance to correspond with David. I am so sorry for Iris and his family as well as his many friends and colleagues. He will be sorely missed.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I just spent some time trying to find some information that confirms this, but I'm not finding anything.

Alison_M, where did you hear this?

Pittsburgh, PA

Thanks Joan....there was a poster on that other forum, "Sunny", who gave details about the time and manner of his death, but she didn't indicate where she got her information either...so for now, I think I'll just fold my hands and wait for more confirming info...

Shelley

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I have some photos of him...and Iris Marie...will try to find them.

(Zone 1)

I've been googling for about 1 1/2 hours for newspapers in the Qld area but apparently they do not list obituaries or funeral notices like the newspapers here in the U.S. I did find this: http://www.obits.com.au/ and typed in David's name but it came back "No Results."

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

It would be terrible if this tragedy was some kind of Internet hoax. I guess I'm too trusting; I usually believe what ever I read, but now I'm starting to wonder. Where did the story originate from? Who is "Sunny"? Is she a personal friend of the Liddles?

Doug

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

So very sorry if this is true!!!

Yes, it is true.

Often when we are confronted with news that is a shock we
naturally feel it is unbelievable. We don't want it to be true.

My friend lives in Townsville, Queensland. She had been at the
nursery with him Saturday afternoon. She told me that when
she got the news on Monday morning that she just couldn't believe
it.

She did not, however, disbelieve it. She told me he had a heart
attack during the night, Iris found him next morning. Nothing more.
There is just nothing more. And for a grieving family that is enough.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

God bless them!!!!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Yes...it all is true as Alison said (good to see you posting here, Alison!!!). I spoke to Adair (his son). Iris is doing well - as well as can be expected (she was out feeding the birds...life goes on). She is a strong woman and it is hard on everyone!!!

Carol

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Thank you for that reaffirmation. I feel much better now knowing that it's not rumors, but I feel so bad for the family.

I can't find where David was a member here on Dave's Garden to put the forget-me-not icon on his member page. If he was a member and you know his DG name, please let us know so we don't overlook that detail, as well as the Memory Garden post.

Shepherdstown, WV

Were hoyas/his nursery David's full time gig as well as his passion? Carol, I'm glad you had Mark post photos. I didn't realize he was so young.

What a loss.

Mark, Thank you so much for sharing those photo's on the Stemma Forum of David and his Iris Marie Liddle. They are young. I had never seen photo's of either of them and for some reason thought they were in their late 70's. I guess God needed an Angel to tend a beautiful Hoya garden in heaven.

I know David will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him here on earth.

Lin

p.s. For some reason I can't post on the Stemma Forum, I type my post but when I click on Reply I get a little box that pops up on the screen about changing my settings ... have changed them and changed them and still am not able to post there. I haven't been able to send mail from my yahoo acct. in awhile either, can receive mail but can't get to a place to type new mail.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I haven't gone on Stemma Forum yet...but here is one of my favorite photos of David:

Lin, no problem. They were Carol's photos- I especially like the closeup with the bird. I would have liked to have met them in person myself, but I never got down under.
p.s. I'll take a look at the settings on your account.

(Zone 1)

Carol, that is close to one of the ones Mark posted on Stemma. David looks like he was a happy, congenial person!

Mark, Thanks so much for checking my Stemma account settings! It may very well be something I screwed up.

Turnerville, GA(Zone 7a)

What a terrible shock....my sincere condolences to his family. He will truly be missed....I'm so glad I ordered from him the past two years....I hope Iris is able to keep the business going.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

David was a big man...in thought, in action, in appreciation of nature/food/people. It actually IS the same the photo. I don't even think David was 60 years old....

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Here is the emai I received from Iris:

Dear friends,

It is with regret that we write to you in regards to David James Liddle who pased away in the early hours of Monday the 21st of September. He is greatly missed by us here and will be loved by us forever. We apologise to those of you who we haven't been able to contact earlier, as we have had difficulty finding contact details for a number of dad's friends. Please be patient with us as we do have a number of important things to keep up with over the coming weeks, but feel free to contact us if you wish. We will be checking the email once or twice a day, but we may not be able to answer at this time. Please feel free to contact anyone that might have known David, who doesn't appear on this list. Thank you.

Kindest Regards,

Iris and Adair Liddle

(Zone 1)

Awanda,

Thanks so much for sharing your e-mail from David's wife and son. I didn't know David Liddle, but from everything I've read, he was a knowledgeable and a very highly respected gentleman ... a huge loss to this world.

Lin

Joan, I'm fairly sure that David Liddle was not a member of Dave's Garden.

Christine

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Thanks Christine!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

No...David was not a member of DG. He did not want to impart his information on a site that was not open, for free, for anyone to access.
