Found 4 of these on a zucchini. The basic shape is very similar to a picture I saw on here of a lady bug pupa. I saw this one kind of... rear up.. on its tail, which is firmly attached to the surface of the zucchini. Is it a potato bug or something in that family?
If it matures and hatches I'll take another picture of the adult beetle.
Beetle pupa? Yellow body with ornate black spikes
This appears to be a larva of a squash beetle, Epilachna borealis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) - see http://www.flickr.com/photos/shyzaboy/3759085590/ for an image. Like its close relative the Mexican bean beetle, this is one of the 'rogues' of the lady beetle family.
