in the Calif. forum who's into Daylilies ? I know doss likes them and has several, but I rarely see anyone here show pics. of them in their gardens. I realize there's a dl forum here, just curious as to who else grows them.
Randy (Desert Pirate) has shown budding interest, (no pun intended) but surely there are others who grow them...if so, make yourself known in the dl forum !
Am I the only one....?
Not a DL lover, but I hate for you to be lonely, Mike. :-)
Yes, we'd come see you just to keep you company, but, don't know why, just don't care for DL's.....
I have a dozen or so CVs that I just bought. Haven't put them in the ground yet but when I do and they start to flower, I will share photos.
There, now you have someone to play with! LOL
I have them in Las Vegas but it took me over 5 years to come up with a solution to solve the problems I had. I was not fertilizing enough, the soil was not aerated enough and they needed subtle shade. Not shade but not direct sun. When I finally came up with that conclusion, because of DG, I am now the proud parent of many DL's.
DH weed whacked the last two that I had. I give up on Day lilies. But please do share your photos! I still like to look!

Hey SingingWolf, I am getting together a whole box of plants for you to use in your landscape. My DH has been under the weather but at the moment is better but iffy. Feeling faint, immediate sweating and tired. His cardiologist says everything looks good but he does have this weird look about him. I cannot put my finger on it but he does not look normal. I have been rehabilitating a flower bed and getting my winter vegetable garden planted. I am behind but God will help me. I will D Mail you for your address because I want my special high desert plants growing on your mountain. My sister is coming in this week because our high school is celebrating their 100 year celebration. No I was not a member of the first graduating class. I graduated in 1960. I school opened in 1909. The Grand Marshall graduated in 1929. Her name is Martha Bleak and the sweetest woman you will ever meet. ""Remember, I was packed before graduation and if I was not on the road within 24 hours, I was stuck there the rest of my life. My graduating class had 29 students. Four are now deceased. My main object besides the reunion is the hollyhocks. They should be setting seed and these hollyhock are at least 40 years old. What am I bid. Just a hug will get you many. Take care and talk to you soon. This was my lovely Madeline helping me in the garden rehab. Actually, this was after she helped and she was tired. She is sleeping on bulbs needing to be transplanted. She would not leave my side. She is 11 and my mbuddy. She is a miniature German Schnauzer.
Oh, what a lovely puppy (they're all puppies to me). Hi Madeline!
Follow up with Dr. about DH. Especially if you notice a grayish tinge to his lips or complexion. He may need to have test done, to find out what is going on. Don't wait, be a nag.
Madeleine will always be your gardening buddy, just like my Blessing. She sure looks pretty in that photo! She certainly doesn't look her age.
Take your time, I'm going to be gone for two weeks, to the beach, and then I'll be putting in my fall garden.
More in reply to your dmail.
Hope you have fun at the reunion, and yes, I remember you saying your suitcase was packed before graduation. The town where I was born was like that. Although, in the last 10 years, people seem to be moving back. Hmmm.
Heirloom Hollyhocks! I'm cute and huggable! : - ) Ask weegy or KC!
LOL!
Sorry for hijacking your thread JD. (I guess you're used to it by now!)

I'm a daylily fan (pun intended) ;-))! I'm a newbie to them - only have about15- 20, that I planted last fall. I'm trying to choose re-bloomers & not spend too much $, so as you can imagine, I have common varieties... but I plan to add more each year.

Good ! At least not all the dl addicts aren't on the east coast !
I only developed a fondness for them recently. My mom had several beds in Mississippi before she sold her house. The young couple that bought the house are more into "lawn" than beds, so when I go back there, I've been promised all the DLs I can put in a suitcase. I think I'll pack an overnight bag for myself and a couple of LARGE suitcases for the DLs. LOL. I really have no idea what varieties she has. If I know my mom though, there'll be quite a number. I feel foolish for not having the understanding of them when she had so many blooming. Don't know why, but they just didn't interest me then.
Sounds like Christmas is coming early for you this year :-) Did your mom mark the varieties she planted or will you just have to wait and see what they are when they bloom?
She has a remarkable memory for someone 87 years old. I used to walk with her around the DL beds and she's rattle off the names of each one whether it was blooming or not. She only sold the house early this year, so I'm sure she still remembers all of them.
Good for her, and you!
I'll share what I can't use. It'll probably be this winter before I get back there though.
I grow flowers mainly for cut flowers, and unfortunately, daylilies do not fit into that category. I am amazed, however, at the many different hybrids they have - all shapes, colors and forms.
I have one bed that I use exclusively for cut flowers. Right now it's bursting with Cosmos in several colors. Keeps the tables in the work room full of flowers. Those office types really like that. Personally, I prefer them in the ground.
The small local branch of the library near me sometimes has a big vase with dl's in it at the front desk. I was admiring it one day and asked one of the women working there if someone on the staff grew them. She said yes, and pointed to a lady off doing something else with a patron.
I approached her when she wasn't busy and asked her about them and she was extremely tight lipped...as if she thought I was going to find out where she lived and come and steal them ! ( Well excuuuuuuuuuse me !)
Mike I am not in California but I love daylilies too. I am still working out issues like amending soil and fertilizing. And theya ctual grow pretty well here in the desert.
I thought I remembered talking to you about dl's the last time we were at Louise's ! LOL
