Has anyone ever tried to plant the seeds from the:
Ornamental Sweet Potato, Sweet Potato Vine
Ipomoea batatas 'Sweet Caroline Purple'?
I just took seeds off of my plant and wondered how true they would be or if they would grow at all???
Ornamental Sweet Potato, Sweet Potato Vine
I never saw any seeds on my sweet potatoe vine. I buy the plant every year. I would love to be able to grow it from seeds to save myself some money. Can you explain to me where and how you harvested the seeds?
the only one I know that makes seeds is the dark burgandy one with the pink flower. The flower goes to seed, they are big seeds and easy to find.
Here is the link to the one I'm talking about: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/186346/
OR you can dig up the tuber after the first frost, cut the tops off, rinse the tuber, let it dry for a few days, put it in paper in the basement or a cool room. Then just bring it out next spring and plant it!
Wow! Thanks
I'll second that! Wow! .....Good to know! :) Thanks!
The black/purple seem to be the one's commonly producing seeds.here check this out http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/golgi_1141757912_404.jpg&imgrefurl=http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/101381/&usg=__iy17riWo4PXFECilnSyXvOmISEU=&h=600&w=800&sz=108&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=CYI3nyP4QCpczM:&tbnh=107&tbnw=143&prev=/images%3Fq%3DOrnamental%2BSweet%2BPotato,%2BSweet%2BPotato%2BVine%2Bseeds%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1
I have Blackie Sweet Potato Vines, the black/purple ones, and they never had seeds. If yours have seeds, that's great! I don't know why some do and some don't.
Ok I am going to try to dig up tubers after the first frost. Than try also to plant some seeds, I guess it can't hurt to try the seeds and see what happens... We will find out in the spring. I also put a few pieces I picked off the plants and rooted them. I'm just going to leave them in a cup of water all winter and keep them cut back all winter. they rooted beautifully... I'm always trying to save a little money on my plants since I have so many.... What ever works!
I guess you are really covered by three different methods!! They will probably all work. I started out with one plant and then divided it into 5 plants. They were annoying me because they were growing so well and covering up other plants that couple of weeks ago I cut them down to 3-4 inches. They all look pretty healthy now. I was able to give one away. Yea!! They are very hardy plants and they have grown more than any plant I have ever had! You could have your whole garden of them, starting with one plant! You can cut them in pieces, or even small pieces, and just stick them in the ground and they will grow!
I've heard that Blackie's seeds don't germinate but I've never tried it myself. One of these years when I have more time I'd like to give it a try.

From one - many!!!!
I dug up my Blackie Sweet Potato vines a couple days ago. No tubers. And I did find seeds which I may experiment with. I just didn't know what I was looking for. I saved just a few small pieces with leaves, pieces of the root, and threw out the rest. So now I have some very small indoor plants! And I will be ready for spring if I want to plant them outside.
