'Clarke's Extra Early Strain 1930' Heirloom` ex 1978

Birmingham, United Kingdom

Few people realise that 'Clarke Extra Early Strain" was introduced in 1936. The usual forms of "Heavenly Blue" were quite late flowering. Sadly ipomoea tricolor has been placed to one side for a number of years and mot much has been done with the species. A number of companies in the past up until the 1970's stocked Wedding Bells, Summer Skies, Flying Saucers, Blue Star and Pearly Gates. It's important that more people grow ipomoea tricolor and keep the specific cultivators going.

The usual "darker" ipomoea tricolor these days called "Heavenly Blue" has little resemblance to the true "Clarkes Extra Early Strain" that has larger flowers, more vigour and is profuse in every manner.

Often you will see the packet's marked "Heavenly Blue" and you expect the true azure powder blue...but you never get it as often the photos are recycled or the product inside does not match the photo which is usual for morning glories.

Here is "Clarke's Extra Early Strain" Also notice it is DIFFERENT than other ipomoea tricolor variations in the simmering quality and the shape of the corolla...

Where can i find seed for these? Are they available through any seed companies?

Birmingham, United Kingdom

I cannot provide links as that is advertising and against the terms and conditions nor I am selling or trading seed.

It will require some work but you will have to go to google or another search engine and enter either clarke's early+ipomoea tricolor or clarke's+morning glory or a variation.

It will require some hard work on your part and most important you need to send an e-mail to the seller asking for a photo they have of where the seed came from. It's not likely what you see on the packet is what you get as these days seed companies seem to buy seed in mass bulk from supplier of the "improved version" which in my opinion is not improved. Some smaller firms will carry heirloom seed.

Here is some artwork from a package, you won't see details like this anymore.

It shows what has been lost
