This spider was in my Northern NH perennial garden. It is smooth with hairy patterned legs and an interesting white-spotted pattern on back.
CLOSED: CLOSED: Northern NH spider
This looks like another Marbled Orb Weaver similar to the one in this post: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1038361/
It looks like a very gravid female. The coloration is a little different, however, from the other post; but it is not uncommon for the colors to vary within the same species. Maybe someone else can confirm this ID.
I don't know. All the images of orbweavers don't really match my spider. The spots on its back are white dots of varying sizes. Now I'm afraid to get back into the lush garden, bc I imagine this spider has a family in there, too. Still looking, and hope someone can ID this bugger.
This more likely is a shamrock orbweaver, Araneus trifolium - see http://www.nicksspiders.com/nicksspiders/araneustrifolium.htm for an example. This species can be highly variable in color pattern, as can the marbled orbweaver, But in any case, all orb weavers are harmless to humans.
