We found a few of these bugs this year near our western Maine home that we are hoping to identify. Our digital cam is not working so I'll describe best I can.
It is roughly 1.5" long with antennae about the same length. He is dark brown (splotchy camouflage look) with a dark grayish hue on belly. His face makes him look kinda intimidating (as does his size) with his good sized pinchers and lower 'jaw' area.
Really hoping for a push in the right direction to identify this insect, I have been looking through pics and have not found yet.
Any help is appreciated.
CLOSED: ID Lg Bug w/ Lg Antennae ??
oh and it does not appear to have wings. the body reminds me of a beetle ( a large one) and it is one piece.
and has 6 legs :)
The image provided is that of a long-horned wood-boring beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). I suspect that is exactly what you have; if yours has projections on the body segment behind the head, it likely would be a Monochamus sp. - see http://tinyurl.com/ktb4vo and http://tinyurl.com/nnoots for examples. BTW, they do have wings and can fly.
Thank you for your help :)
