CLOSED: What in the .....(South Central Mass.)

Brookfield, MA

Saw this handsome devil this morning at a Cache In Trash Out Geocaching event at Purgatory Chasm in Sutton Ma. It was in a giant (very very strong) web at eye level in the woods. There are two pictures the blurry one was him in the middle of the web and would be his underside. (duh you knew that).
Ive seen many spiders in Massachusetts but this one was a first for me. Bright orange and a black (sort of) hourglass on the belly or . Bright white with tribal type black designs all over the back. Very Scary looking.

Was really happy to have seen him. Too bad my pictures didnt come out!

This is a marbled orb weaver (Araneus marmoreus); this species comes in a wide variety of color patterns - see http://tinyurl.com/nkcdvk for an example. Like all other orb weavers (family Araneidae), it is harmless to humans.
