Cool Wet September Blooms

Arlington, TX

I planted some marigolds 2 years ago and this year after I reworked the bed some in spring, these popped up everywhere.

Never thought to try sedum autumn joy here but I saw it about a month ago half dead at Low's and decided to try it. Seems happy.

My first bloom, hoping to keep the plant alive this winter but really have no experience with them.

Two new plants in my yard this year. Zexmenia always looks good but looks better if I trim it now and again. The ice plants looked great all spring but were sad and nearly flowerless until the last couple weeks.

Stephanie & newtonsthirdlaw, I have found bulbine to very hardy here. Mine overwintered and I didn't do anything to protect them in the beds. This has become one of my favorites.

Arlington, TX

I see them for sale and like the look but didn't know if they would over winter. Are you in a warmer zone than me? I think its 8a here.

I have some Bulbine that made it through the last four winters, but almost lost it one year. Some I had transplanted that year bit the dust. If you get some, I would say overwinter inside and plant out early spring to give it the best chance.

newtonsthirdlaw, I would dig the variegated Brug up and keep it inside this Winter. The variegated seem to have a harder time coming back. You can cut it back as much as needed and root the cuttings of course. Does it have a name?

Sunset I think. I am going to repot (it is still in its store container) and keep it near the patio door and bring it in during periods of freezing temps. I do not have a place to store the plant indoors on a permanent basis. Can it survive in a pot as long as I do not let it stay out when temps drop below 32F?

Would it be better to repot, cut it back and keep it indoors even if it won't get much light this winter? I really like the plant and can see it has potential as a nice potted specimen. I need some suggestions on this one as I am not at all experienced with growing semi-tropical plants. Most of what I select for the garden is tough and perrenial.

Well I am finally going to join the party now that Sept. is almost over.

Here is a close up of my Candle Tree. I haven't seen any Sulphur catapillars yet, but still hoping.

For all interested in Bulbine........
I will be coming to Arlington & will be bringing Bulbine that I have divided. I will bring one of my older plants & show you how they do division at that farm I used to work at!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I am signing up to see that! I have a bulbine that I am frightened to touch.
Sheila, those are beautiful shots, Your yard must be incredible now. Can't wait to get T Betony.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Anna, I may try some cuttings and will let you know if they work.

Smockette....Great timing on the Bulbine, I have a large one in an area of a bed that has to be eliminated. We need to change the layout for the riding lawnmower. I don't think I will try moving it until it is dormant or maybe in the spring. But I would love to know how to divide safely.

I just love my bulbine! I picked up some from Datura at the RU in April just to try and they took off and have been going strong all summer.
