Him is a her. This is a female Argiope aurantia, a common orb weaver that goes by a variety of common names - see http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/69/

My favorite spider too! Always find them at the end of the summer in their big orb webs. Nothing like a orb web heavy with dew sparkling in the morning sun in late summer. Kind of sad too, it is a signal of the coming to an end of the gardening and growing things.

Charlotte in "Charlotte's' Web" was one of these! Another name is writer spiders!
