I did a seed exchange with a local person today and found these in the hollyhock seed heads. LOTS of them. I don't dare open the bag until I kn w what they are and what to do about them.
CLOSED: What is this, now?
These are hollyhock weevils (Rhopalapion longirostre; Coleoptera: Brentidae); the female has a much longer snout than the male - see http://tinyurl.com/nv257j for an image. They do not appear to cause significant harm to the plants.
Okay, thank you.
Well I have read other posts that they can cause damage. I sprayed some diluted dawn dish soap at 1 tsp/gallon of water and got an instant kill if you want to control them.
Good tip. Plants are doing well.
