Thanks
More hummer photos. Warning: I take terrible pictures!
I think he's a Black-chinned, also. It looks like there is a little white spot at the corner of his eye and a white spot at the bottom edge of his tail feathers. And I agree, the bottom edge of the black chin feathers has a little purple color, and that's definitely a white collar under the black chin before the mottled feathers on his breast.
Dan True (the link above) says you can have Black-chinned in Ontario, and he is a hummer expert. He has a book out about hummers.
I just saw a Black-Chinned Hummingbird at my Cuphea David Verity, then followed him around (moving quickly from window to window) to my Fuchsia Gartenmeister, examining his markings all the way. If scicciarella hadn't posted her picture above, if Karen hadn't posted the link above, and if I hadn't taken a moment to do a little research helping ID scicciarella's hummer, I would have assumed I was seeing a ruby-throated.
It's 45 degrees outside! All my regular hummers left last week, but I'm still maintaining all my flowering plants and keeping the feeders fresh, just in case.
I rechecked the distribution for Black-Chinned at the aforementioned link, and they list:
Observed in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.
Ontario: Ruby-throated, Rufous, Green Violet-ear, Broad-billed, Black-chinned.
What a wonderful morning this has been, even though it's cold and overcast outside.
black chinned are very rare in ontariob I have been here 25 years and this was the first year that I have ever seen any and they like it cool so they only stayed for a couple of weeks and as soon as it got over 75f during the day they headed north, I didnt see them this fall I still have the feeders out usually only bring them in at the end of october.
but I am glad that we got all of that sorted out next spring I will put out the feeders earlier just for them
