Is this a barn spider?

This gorgeous/creepy thing and its six buddies have been hanging out under our awnings.

I think due to its markings and nocturnal activities that it might be a barn spider...but I'm no expert.

This could be a barn spider (Araneus cavaticus), but this and several other species in this genus can be quite variable in appearance, and thus difficult to separate in the field.
