CLOSED: Is this an Africanized honey bee?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

My poor hubby was moving some fallen branches to our burn pile and got stung. We didn't see a swarm, but there were at least 10 bees chasing him around. He got stung in five places, ouch! I put some Benadryl on his bites, thankfully he is not allergic. A couple of bees actually followed him into the house and I shot them w/ Raid.

Can you help me ID? I will call a pest control service tomorrow as that is what the TAMU website recommends. It appears they are still a rare occurrence in my area so I will also call our ext. office.

Thanks for your help

Looks more like a yellow jacket than a honeybee. They are nasty too, but I don't think number as many per nest.

Let us know what the extirminators say. :)

Yes i would have to agree it does indeed look like a yellow jacket. They have quite a temper, and can sting more than once.

I am familiar w/ yellow jackets and uhh, do those suckers hurt! IMO, the yellow jacket has more yellow in its body. But, in any case, I will be calling our extension office and the pest control dude. I will report here. Hubby had to take ibuprofen last night b/c he was quite sore with the 5 bites. All is well today. In fact, he carefully walked to where he was attacked and located the nest in the ground.

Whew! Not an africanized bee. I just received a call from an entomologist at Texas A&M and he said that the way you know it's a bee is if it leaves a stinger on you. Ours were yellow jackets and no stingers had to be removed from DH's skin.

Our nest in inground. He recommended pouring gasoline in the hole when it's dark (dusk?).

Whew is right vossner!

Vossner, I saw a special on Africanized bees that stated the bees offer a warning before attack....they will actually fly directly at you and 'bump' you as you approach the hive. If you proceed, then they swarm to protect the hive....sort of reminds me of the borgs from StarTrek....communal mind.....

Borg bees. I've made a note of that. Thanks moonhowl.

You are very welcome...i like having all the info possible on potential threats....the more we know, the safer we can be.
