What is your favorite Hydrangea paniculata?

I want to add an H. paniculata to a bed that gets about 6 hrs of sun a day. My garden is sometimes on the dry side and is a loamy clay. I use a sprinkler to keep up with it but at least once a season I usually miss getting it watered in time. I have a six foot high stockade fence at the back of the bed and I want the Hydrangea to grow at least 2-3 feet above the fence as a screen. I saw a Pink Diamond at Lowe's the other day. It had the most gorgeous flowers on it I've ever seen. They were so long and huge mostly white with a touch of pink. The foliage was a really great deep deep green color and very clean. The only problem is that they tried making it a standard and it looked awful. It was not straight, the flower heads flopped and it was short. Anyone know of a paniculata that fits my space? Thanks :-)

Any of the paniculatas should work for you. 'Tardiva' is an old standby. 'Pink Diamond', 'Quick Fire', 'Limelight', and even the ironclad 'PeeGee' should all grow to the height you need if you don't cut them back. There are more compact forms out recently, but these get big! Half-day sun should be fine, but any will need plenty of water the first year. If you plant it this fall, it will be more ready for dry weather next year.

I sold a dozen Pink Diamond to a customer today and also noticed they are a bit floppy but I think that gets better with age. The landscaper and I noticed these from a distance and she had to have them for one of her installs. I'd amend the soil in the area you'll plant and as HoosierGreen mentioned, now would be a good time to plant. I say "go for it".

Thank you both very much! Now that my time to purchase and plant has evaporated, I'm on hold again, hopefully not for too long. Love getting your personal experiences to help me decide.

Thanks again... :-)
