Found on a Maple tree in Detroit Michigan. 09/02/09. There were about ten of these "shells" around, and latched onto the tree. Looks like what ever bug it is, split the back of the shell, and departed. Leaving the shell still attached to the tree.
CLOSED: Outer shell of bug, split down the back.
These are the 'shells' of cicada nymphs. After spending several years (up to 17 years in Magicicada sp.) underground feeding on tree roots, they tunnel to the surface, climb a convenient object, and shed their exoskeleton. See http://tinyurl.com/mpx93w for some images.
That's very interesting! Thank you.
Thank you for clarifying! I have a 5 yo that is taking the shells to school tomorrow for show and tell!
