This guy let me get close enough for this photo and then flew away. Does anyone know what it is?
CLOSED: Long-legged creature on goldenrod
This is a crane fly (Diptera: Tipulidae); appearing to be a Tipula sp. - see http://tinyurl.com/mlhtfj for an example. This is a very large family with thousands of species, the vast majority of which are completely harmless. The larvae of a few species can be turf pests, feeding on the roots of grasses. If adults feed at all, it is on nectar or other plant fluids - see http://tinyurl.com/ktfxqy for more detailed information.
Thanks, suunto!
