Tropicals in Canada

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

skylon, I was wondering the same about the winter. I tend to kill houseplants, so I don't have many.

I brought mine in when it started getting too cold, chopped it back toabout 6" and put it in a south-facing window. It's already grown more than 2 feet tall, so it behaves really well as a houseplant! But it needs a lot of sun I'm told.

Hi, I know I'm crazy to have sooooo many plants. I try not to buy to many annuals cause its waist of money.
Next year you start with nothing again, so instead I buy tropicals. I used to keep them in my basement.
I have a cold room with growing lights which keep them alive.
Last year I got myself a nice sun room which I packed with my tropicals, gas fireplace
and a nice sitting area so I have my summer and my winter paradise.
the sun room used to be a carport and I had it closed in with patio doors.

Your tropical gardens are beautiful Maryanne. And what a wonderful idea to have a Sun Room like yours in the winter. If you ever want to open a B&B, I'll be there!

NO kiddin! How old is your garden? It looks mature.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Maryanne..."WOW"

Theresa I pull them out of my neighbors basement end of March and cut them into chunks with eyes and put them into buckets in my basement untill they sprout then they go under lights untill they get too big. They then move to my living room where they get lights from their backs in front windows. I really hope by then they can go out to the green house. I have found the bigger chunk you start with the bigger bang for your buck with the plant later on.
But I must admit that they are worth it.

It took me around 7years to do my front and backyard. Every summer I would do a new project, add more perenials and new flowerbeds
This is my front

Just lovely. And with all that landscaping and flower beds, you've cut down on the amount of grass you have to cut. Very clever! ^_^

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

skylon,

Your yard is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Beautious is an understatement!

st catharines, Canada

Well I have 4 dogs and I just couldn't keep my grass alive in the back.
So this was the project for this summer, out with the grass in with a nice stone pathway and more flowerbeds.

I was admiring those in an early pic. Brugs? If only they were hardy here sigh.

st catharines, Canada

I better go and do some work outside, its nice and sunny.

droooooooool

st catharines, Canada

They are not hardy, you have to bring them in, store them in the basement, cold dark place, and they will go to sleep.
I store my trumpets in my insulated shad.I take them out of barrels and into smaller pots and cut back.
Lots of work but its worth it. My backyard smells and looks like heaven in the evening

Just lovely and smells good too! I really like what you have done with the stone and plantscape. Do your dogs miss the grass?
Ann

st catharines, Canada

Not really, they love the stone pathway. And its sooo much easier to clean up after them and power wash

Great photos of your tropical paradise, Maryanne ! I am glad to know that I am not alone in my "madness" ! Last weekend was spent digging my brugs out of the ground with the intention of putting them to "sleep" in the garage but they had so many buds still to open that I have left them in pots in front of the house to get the last rays of sunshine before our grey, dreary, winter sets in. I have noticed I have not had any mail for the last few days - I'm thinking the mailman can't get through the jungle !!

What a lovely back yard! I don't dare leave my Canna's out as we are zone 3. I do know that they are very hardy and some at the U of A seem to come back every year but I don't know if they are taken out and put back in or if they are left in the planters. The planters are against a large heated building so it may buy a zone or two.
I am amazed that you are able to keep them in the ground as I can't keep them wet enough unless they are in pots. Mind you have the moisture in the air too.
I do store mine in a neighbor's cold room which is almost freezing so I know they can take a frost or two.
Next spring I will be dividing my Wyoming again so if you would like a chunk I can send you one.
Where did you get your Banana Canna, boy that's a good one, say it fast 3 times.

Thank you, I can keep them in the ground and actually they did quite well, i do however water almost every day.. I have to take them out, it took me 18 hours to get them out and all packed up for storage.. I actually have wyoming but i dont have any cleo.. I got the banana canna from a trade last may and it just took off..
