This is a flower/hover fly (Diptera: Syrphidae); they often are found at flowers, and the larvae of many species are predaceous on aphids and other small arthropods. This is a very large family that includes species that can have widely differing appearances. See http://tinyurl.com/lm9ovg and http://tinyurl.com/mqht8l for a few examples.
Thanks suunto. I tried finding a mtach to the scpecific spoecies of hoverfly this is, but no luck. Are there so many species of some insects that they don't even have common names?
That's quite true. Not only do the great majority of insect species lack a broadly accepted common name, some species go by several!
I'll just list this a "hoverfly species" then.
Birds don't have this problem, that makes it a little easier (plus there's tens of thousands of more species of insects than birds)
