is my boxwood dying?

(Zone 5b)

Should I cut this yellow section out? I planted these in April and I know they're not everybody's favorite shrub but I love them. Is this fixable?

Yes, trim out the brown branches carefully. I see this from breakage during transport at the nursery or after planting. The break may have happened in April but took some time to be noticeable.

Mine have been planted for years and occasionally I'll have these brown spots. Like growin said, trim out carefully. I thought it was caused by my and visiting dogs marking territory, but I have never taken time to research. Once spot is trimmed, it is out of my mind.

thanks vossner, this is in my foundation bed so I don't think dogs are to blame. I'll trim it today...um...what do you guys mean by "carefully?" Somehow I don't think you're warning me not to cut myself lol

well, what I mean is that sometimes I trimmed a much larger piece than I needed to cut, just because I wasn't keeping a close eye on my pruner. So, cut a little bit, then if still brown left, go to the next joint, and so on. That will avoid having a bigger gap than need be.

Of course, don't cut you finger!!!!!

oh and I forgot to say that I don't think your boxwood is dying. I have never had one go all brown in me. But just in case, do ck that it is getting sufficient water.

I have seen them turn all brown in abandoned houses where nobody is watering. I have a sprinkler system and sometimes the heads break (from the mower). All of a sudden a plant gets no water and dies quickly before you realize what's going on. So, if you have a sprinkler, do ck the appropriate head so make sure it's functioning properly.

where are the smartest people in the world? Dave's Garden! I checked the soil 3 inches down, looked good, moist. crawled under the shrub and lo & behold a broken branch.
You guys are great! Thanks!
