My dad told me that when my Granny saved her seeds, she use to put a piece of solid camphor in the jar with the seeds to prevent bugs from being/getting in the jar. Has anyone else heard of this? Is there anything else better to use?
Solid camphor in jar w/seeds to prevent bugs???
Do you get bugs in with your seeds?
This has never been a problem to me here.
If it is a problem would spraying the inside of the jar with insecticide work?
How about a few mothball flakes?
Good luck seed saving!

I was just going to ask this ?. I have been seeing a few very tiny insects in with my fresh seeds. I was thinking of putting in a moth ball temporarily, maybe wrapped in a bit of cloth to prevent the mothball from contact with the seed to kill them.
Good idea ????
Yes, that is a good idea to wrap the mothball in cloth. That way it won't contaminate the seeds, but hopefully it gets rid of the bugs.
I had some little black bugs that looked like seeds at first in with my hibiscus seeds. I took the entire dish outside and let it sit (under cover) for a few days, and they seemed to disappear. But I don't know if they damaged the seeds or not. I noticed some small indentations in a few of the hib seeds, but I don't know if that was just how the seed was when I collected it, or because the bug ate it or something. Any ideas/experience?
I think the seeds will be okay. Bugs tend to like the soft, leafy parts of plants.
Thank you!
I was able to get a couple pictures of my seeds, and posted them here (http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1039672/), if anyone would care to take a look and offer up their opinion. I find it strange some of my hib seeds have holes and others do not.
