My mother-in-law was outside taking out the trash and came in to tell us to come look, and in between our shed and fence was a gigantic spider. Not sure what it is. Some please identify!
New Spider
This is an orb-weaving spider (family Araneidae) in the genus Araneus; they all are harmless to humans.
Do you know what kind of orb-weaver it is?
I'm often reluctant to pin a specific name on an image of spiders in this genus, as several species can superficially resemble one another. That aside, a good possibility for this one is Araneus cavaticus, a very common and widespread species. As a child on our farm, I knew these as 'barn spiders' - see http://tinyurl.com/ksejz8 for an example.
