This landed on my deck today and no one in my house has ever seen anything like it. We were trying to identify what it is and were hoping that someone on this website could be of some assistance.
CLOSED: What is this?
It's a harmless Ichneumon wasp that lays its eggs in holes that it drills in trees. The offspring parasitize other insects. Genus Megarhyssa, not sure which species but there's only a few it could be:

Like I said, none of us have ever seen this before and we were glad to know that it does not sting.
