What kind of wasp?
This wasp is in the family Siricidae (horntails/wood wasps); it appears to be a pigeon tremex, Tremex columba - see http://tinyurl.com/mr8ypo for an example. This insect occurs in several different color phases; their larvae bore in the wood of dead or dying deciduous trees. I collected some of these on our farm near Minot ND back in the 1950s.
