I found this in my car in Southern California tonight. Can anybody tell me what it is?
It's about 30mm long and hairy. When provoked it buzzes by shaking it's "tail". The wings are copper in color.

Appears to be a California Carpenter Bee. Had a colony in a stump in my yard for years, they made great neighbors! Non aggresive & inquisitive
Did you see any all-yellow bees around as well? You might have the valley carpenter bee
(Xylocopa varipuncta); males and females of this species differ markedly in appearance - see http://tinyurl.com/czrzyp for images and detailed information.
