I found this ant (or at least I presume it is an ant, not a wasp) roaming around on the carpet yesterday - I live in Warwickshire, UK. I've been looking on various sites since then trying to identify it, but have had little luck. What seems particularly unusual is the very long and thin petiole joining the abdomen to the thorax - in other pictures of similar-looking ant, this petiole seems to have one or two nodules, but as you can seem from my picture, the petiole on this ant is completley smooth.
Can anyone identify it for me please?
Anyone know what kind of ant this is?
This is not an ant, but a wasp; possibly in the family Sphecidae.
Thanks suunto - I've had a look at various picture of this wasp species and it does appear to match (in shape at least). Still can't find out exactly which wasp it is though...
