A few questions....

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hi everyone,
I started some seeds this winter. I now have a jungle.

1. When I moved the seedlings outside I put them in large pots, about three of four seedlings to a pot. Should I keep it to one or two per pot?

2. I have a lot of stockade fencing. Can I put out JMGs to grow on the fence without them seeding all over the place? (yes I had Grandpa Ott at one time)

3. I started my seeds in early Feb last winter. I think that might have been too early. Would mid March be better? Z7 in NJ

4. Right now I am using a 15-30-15 fert. Is there something else or better I should be using to promote bloom.

5. Do MGs have a Ph preference?

6. I would like to increase the number of varieties that I have. I would definitely be interested in trades on this forum but I don't have much to offer at this point. Is there a reliable source to buy seeds?

7. It's at times like this that I truly appreciate DG. I have more questions but don't we all think that's enough for one day? :)

one question i can answer, because I asked it somewhere else...

fertilizing promotes foliage growth.. lessen or cease fertilizing altogether and the MG's should start producing more blooms :)

2nd

if you plant MG's, they are gonna seed...lol.. no matter where you plant them.

3rd

check www.parkseed.com and www.burpee's.com for MG varieties on sale for fall... usually you can pick them this time of year, or Home Depot has them for even less..

Hi Weeze, I'll give my opinion on a few...

1~If you are growing JMG in a pot 3 seeds are OK. I have done 2~3 many times without a problem.

2~JMG or Nils won't be invasive, generally the seeds won't survive your winter and even if they do they won't be invasive like some of the purpureas are. And to top it off you may get some pretty open pollinated crosses.

3~I start mine around May, I was late this year for some and didn't get them stated until late May~into June. March is a bit early but OK if you have the room inside to keep them. Try growing them in the winter inside~ OH so much fun ~oops that will be another thread!! LOL

4~An everyday fertilizer will produce foliage growth which is good in the beginning of the season as they start to bud out switch to a bloom booster fertilizer. I use Monster Bloom by Grotek 0-50-30 it came highly recommended and available online at a fair price. I know Becky and others you miracle grow bloom booster. JMG actually like to be fed.

5~I never bothered with PH so can't answer that one!! Becky or Joseph can I'm sure!!

6~There are quite a few very good vendors on Ebay that sell and are members here. Dmail me and I will give you the links. Also I have plenty of extra seed from last year that you can try, some will be NOIDs and crosses if you don't mind experimenting!!

7~There can never be too many questions about growing MGs!! ☺

Well I hope I answered a few ?s for you. I am sure some others will come along with some opinions too...

Thanks for your responses! Ronnie, are you talking about moving the plant inside to overwinter indoors??

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

No Weeze although you can do that to extend the season and get some seeds, but being they are annual they will eventually die off. I am talking about starting them in the house and growing them under lights or in a very sunny window. I know a few others, all in different areas also have done it. Some use fluorescent lights and some just use mother nature and some (me included one year) use HPS lights...that gets hot and expensive...I am just doing fluorescent lights and sunny window this year to see how it goes. It truly helps me get through winter...
