I think Michigan has more zones than any other state, I am a 4, while just a few miles away is a 5 and on the pennunsula it's 6.
Even down around Pentwater is trhe same thing. Just try growing zone 5 or 6 plants in Crystal Valley!
Is the rain ever going to stop?
Dori,
Beautiful winter intrest there in your pic!! Even tho its a winter scene- I love it!!
I use to live in Negaunee for a couple years when I went to Michigan Tech and then Northern Michigan U.
Use to work with the DNR over there by Ironwood. Got out of that fairly quick. The DNR is so screwed up it's pathetic. Now we have a little spin off called the DEQ which is ten times worse. These guys don't have a clue and it is just another one of Michigans way to dump money into another worthless organization that they must feel they need.
It's all about money...
EDIT:
JYL, You must have gone shroom hunting while in Crystal eh? Best hunting grounds that I know of...

Joel my brother just moved to Traverse City.... and I have a friend in the Ironwood area....there winters are atrocious...No Thank You! for some reason I thought you were in the U.P.??
So is that one of your restoration projects under that huge blanket of snow?
i been to Negaunee when i went to Marquette prison to visit it my XFIL!!!
did circles once down the highway right before Musing-slick roads!! crazy timez!
i should write a book!!! :)
We used to start out looking for mushrooms, but always ended up at the bar with the tree in the middle.
Well,
Back to the rain. It rained all day here. Anyone want to buy a house here in Pentwater.
Lots of water here for your plants...
Hi Delane. Yes that is one that I have not touched since I found it in a barn covered in bird crap five inches thick . They were never imported to the United States. G.I.'s fell in love with them & brought them back from their tour of duty and a few private wealthy individuals paid dearly to get them back on the black market.
There are not too many of these left these days. There wasn't that many made to begain with.
Since they were never imported no parts made it over here. I have been buying any & all I can find (which isn't too many) from Germany & Italy. I thank God this one is original and has all its parts otherwise I don't think it could be done. Not original anyways with the lack of parts.
I will remove the body from the chassis this winter and began a total restoration as I have collected enough parts to put it back together again without major hold ups. A group of us had the interior fabric made from a mill as authentic as the original and also had every electrical wire reproduced to exact standards as the original. This one will be 100% correct.
Here is a pic of what they look like from the factory.
EDIT:
Gotta add you either love it or hate it. A lot of people don't like the lines or styling of this thing.

wow thats gonna be really sharp when it's done Joel....you'll have to post pics through out the restoration process...and what exact kind of little sports car is it? My sons gf's father has a tiny fiat he had shipped over from there village in Italy...awesome condition....
Ugh it's raining, raining, raining....I feel like we almost live in Washington. This is getting really old! I need SUNSHINE!!!!!!!
You can tell it is the weekend. It's pouring.
Good thing the cherry crop happened before all this rain. It was saved.
The blueberries on the other hand are destroyed. Blueberries absorb their moisture thru their skin like cherries. All blueberries in Mason, Oceana & Manistee counties are wiped out. Got too full & split the skins.
Hope some of you are having a decent fall. Hope some of you are getting a nice indian summer. Were getting scalped here......
EDIT:
Delane, believe it or not it is not a sports car.
This was the most powerful, roomiest car with stowage in the front trunk & back trunk that Vw put out in 1961.

Hey guys......
Did summer ever get here, or did I blink my eye and miss it....
Deann
I think while I was bent over pulling weeds that I did see my shadow so that told me there was SOME sun and I felt a little heat on my backside....so that must have meant that we had summer, right?
But one couldn't define it by the fishing this year...it was terrible here.
I've actually got a little electric bill jumper heating my legs while online now.
Pretty sad you can't wear shorts around the house without chilling.
Hate to see the price of propane this year. Their gonna get us worse than last year.
Did Michigan ever hit 90 degrees this summer????
I keep thinking it will give us an indian summer but I guess I should be thinking snows coming and get on the stuff that needs to be done before I can't find stuff again.
Like pick up the pieces of garden & soaker hoses I chopped up with the snow blower last winter.
The cost of propane actually went down for us here. Prices we locked in at were considerably lower than what we paid last winter.
We are putting our hoses away for winter. Lots of chores to do yet. Starting now since summer appears to be over with. September will be here in a few days. Hard to believe. It sure went by fast.
Anybody have a consolidated list of things that need to be done.
IE: how to winter roses or all plants for that matter. I keep looking up every individual plant I have and it is time consuming. I'm trying to figure which plants to whack to the ground and anything special I have to do to all I planted so I don't lose them next year.
What to do for beds. Preen in spring, Grub stuff now Etc. Etc
Anyone have a run down on what they do yearly.
Thanks.
Joel.
Last year we cut corners and hubby just weed whacked down all my perennials. I then raked the debri out of the bed and dumped it all on my compost pile. The ones I left up were the mums, Russian sage, monkshood and the catmint. We then covered the whole bed soil with chopped up leaves. Worked great. In March I put down Preen and after everything is up and going I broadcast Osmocote.
Take down the bird feeders and wash them and put away till next spring. I only have hummingbird feeders.
The roses I wait till after the first frost then I cut them back and cover them with styrofoam covers. Put a brick on top to keep it from blowing away. Don't remove till all danger of "hard" frost is over in spring. Uncovered this spring and there wasn't one bit of damage to the canes and they were putting on new leaves. Put some Osmocote around the base and that was it. They are still blooming.
Pull all the veggie plants up in the garden. Till it all under with the chicken manure/shavings. Blanket it all with deep covering of leaves. Bring all my geraniums in the house. Cut them back. Water them and put by an east window for winter.
Continue mowing till all the leaves are up, chopped and recycled to the garden.
We make sure all the patio furniture is cleaned and put away along with sweeping out and cleaning all the out buildings. Turn off the outside water spigots. Put a snowshovel by both doors. Get the blade on the tractor. Put the bucket of icy-melt by the back door to put on the cement to melt the ice. Get the winter coats cleaned and get all the mittens and hats, scarfs etc. ready to wear. Do maintenance on the generator. Put new filter on the furnace. Put all the driveway reflectors in the ground around the big turnaround driveway.
I'm sure there is more but this is what comes to mind.
Brenda I never thought about weed whacking !! I all ready pulled the cucumbers and acorn squash and cut the daisys monardia (sp) and am getting weeds pulled ' Seems like we are out of time to enjoy summer .:0(
Gloria
Brenda............you are soooooooo organized.......I'm jealous!!
Deann
Gloria
What summer?????? You did not miss a thing....
Deann
I realy need some one to come organize me !! ;0)
Gloria
I thought it slipped by while I was working !!
Gloria
Well, the rain here sort of stopped but the wind is about 25 mph. I have a ton of things to plant. I don't mind working in the rain if it's warm, but it isn't. Very depressed about this weather.
60ish right now and sunshine
yes summer-was depressing
i think we may have had 2 days in the 90s and one of those was in JUNE!!!
:(
Quit raining at 9:00 AM.
62 & gusts now and then. Sun in & out.
I'm out sifting piles of gravel that I threw around that were in the way before to save driving 50 miles to get another truck load. Got back on the propagation cold/hot frames this morn trying to get these finished.
Punk,
What are you planting now?
I'll work in the rain anytime. I have to for my job anyways so it doesn't bother me. I would prefer it a warm downpour too but that doesn't happen.
I bought a lot of campanula on sale at Walmart (lol). I just put it in a holding bed for next spring. I have an oak leaf hydrangea and a lot of of gaillardia I want to get in.
