I found it near the window, is it a wood wasp?
CLOSED: Insect with ovipositor?
Probably not; it more likely is an ichneumonid - see http://tinyurl.com/l4lrph for an image of one of the two wood wasps (family Siricidae) native to the UK. What is the approximate size of this insect?

It's around an inch.
I'm pretty sure now that this is in the family Icheumonidae - see http://tinyurl.com/ldyh6p for an example in the genus Pimpla.
Thanks
