A neighbor asked about the ID of this over-grown shrub and I haven't any idea. It's about 10-12 ft. tall
Know this shrub?
Viburnum of some sort.
Resin
Ahhhh...a handsome healthy Rusty Blackhaw (Viburnum rufidulum) with immature fruit. Those gray-green berry like things will ripen to dark blue/black and then soften. They are edible, tasting a bit like prunes.
Rusty Blackhaw can make a small tree, much like a crabapple. It could be trained to one trunk, though it is just as happy with several trunks like a big shrub. If you want spring bloom, wait till after flowering to prune since that plant has already set flower buds for next year.
Rusty Blackhaw will have a range of fall colors, though it can have a lustrous burgundy to purple tone - Viburnum rufidulum 'Royal Guard' exhibits this characteristic.
Thank you so much!
