Kelly,
I just use hydroton...and have had incredible success with it. I used to mix it with my normal mix, but it just doesn't do as well as the plain hydroton does. I also have lots of orchids growing in hydroton and they are doing very well. Oh, I live in Georgia where the summers can be hot and humid, if that makes any difference...

Dom, the successful engleriana was when you were in the U.K., no? Maybe it's just the cooler temps?
Yes Mark, when I was in the UK.
Much more luck with all the cooler growing Hoyas there and I think they liked the daylight levels and lengths they got there. H polyneura does well here tho.
Mind you, those kept indoors in the UK did receive higher evening temperatures due to heating, be it in the house of the greenhouse. Here the temperatures are cooler in the evenings due to the fact they are outside and it can drop to 13/14º at night here in the winter. My instinct is day lengths contributed a lot to their success in the Northern Hemisphere. Here our daylight lengths only vary about 2 to 3 hours thru the year, winter to summer, whereas in the UK there is a differential of 10 to 11 hours differential in daylight lengths winter to summer. Ive seen some big plants grown in Sweden and their daytime lengths are even greater
