My husband notice this bee? on one of the viburnums....later he killed it for chasing our 3yo granddaugther. Anyone know what this is?
CLOSED: ID this bug?
This is a wasp in the family Sphecidae; they are solitary wasps that construct a burrow in the ground that they provision with insects or spiders as food for their young. They are not aggressive towards humans (I suspect that the 'chasing' was merely curiosity on the part of the wasp); about the only way to get stung by one of these would be to deliberately pick one up. I have observed many species of these at quite close proximity over the years, and have never been threatened, let alone stung, by any of them. You should let these insects live in peace.
thank you very much for the info. as long as they are not the aggressive type I will not let anyone kill them again. I just thought it was interesting bug.
