Help with my confusion about Lilium Division I - !X or X?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I am trying to get my lilies listed in the correct divisions in my Garden Journal, but I am very confused about Division IV "American Hybrids"? I have found it listed as "Lilium Bellingham Group" And then I am not sure whether there are 9 or 10 Divisions. Is there a good source, book or web site which lists the many of the cultivars and others by division. More confusing than Narcissus. Thanks, Patti

Division IV American hybrids for the most part are not usually commercially available. The Bellingham Hybrids are hybrids of L. humboldtii, L. pardalinum and L. parryi.

In my opinion your best resource for determining category is the Lily Register; click on Search and enter the name of your hybrid lily. Unfortunately now days fewer and fewer new lilies get registered, in which case I suggest you ask us here on the forum and we will see if we can get it in the right division for you.

As far as I know Division VIII is Orienpet only (Oriental x trumpet). Division IX is pure species and Division X is the newest weirdos, most of which are improperly listed in Mikes backyard as Div. VIII.

Your first box up there is a schedule for a flower show that loosely followed the official lily divisions but doesn't really accurately represent them.

pardalinum Div.IV! Big help. I will clean up my mess in my journal and then I will post it for corrections from you "knowing people" Thanks for the link and clarification. Patti

Sounds like a good plan!

Hard at work cleaning up my mess. I assume there is no search sites with pictures like http://daffseek.org/ or http://www.helpmefind.com/roses/ or http://db.tinkersgardens.com/ which are all very helpful. I need to send more donations to them as they are great. Patti

If you know the name then try Plantfiles. If you don't know the name and just have a photo and are trying to ID it, then that gets more difficult as so many look alike. From what I see, the lily info in Plantfiles includes the division they are in as well as member photos.

Most of us here don't give a hoot about the abc part and many of the major sellers don't even mention it. A photo usually tells all anyway. It is useful information if you don't have a photo.

For the last year or two, I've been thinking that Div. VIII could use some revamping. Lily Nook has it listed as Interdivisional Hybrids which is great but to my mind means 'everything else'. Thanks to the miracle of embryo rescue nearly anything is possible.

NOT that I want a whole bunch of new divisions! Looking at all the Daff and Narcissus divs makes my little pea brain melt.

I haven't seen where any have been moved out of Div. VIII. Where is this info? Lily Nook still has the LAs in Div. 8, and Species in 9. Can't see any changes at the RHS, but maybe I'm not looking at the right place.

Looks like it came from here http://www.marls.org/MARLS_show_schedule_2009.pdf

My info is from McRae's book so they must have changed things since he wrote it. He also has Div X described as all others etc...

This is the first I've heard of a "Division change". I'm shocked. As far as I know, VIII is still for "all interdivisional hybrids" or "all other" and IX is for species and there is no X. I'm checking this out.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

According to the International Lily Register and checklist 2007 -
First supplement,

Division I - Asiatic hybrids
Division II - Martagon hybrids
Division III - Euro-Caucasian hybrids
Division IV - American hybrids
Division V - Longiflorum lilies
Division VI - Trumpet and Aurelian hybrids
Division VII - Oriental hybrids
Division VIII - Other hybrids
Division IX - Species and cultivars of species

I can go into more detailed descriptions from the Registry, but this is the
most up to date. I note that Division III is no longer Candidum, but is now
called Euro-Caucasion. And Division VIII is now referred to as "other
hybrids". It used to be "interspecific hybrids".

And there you have it. Straight from the horses's mouth. As far as
Division X, there is no such thing. There may be in the future, but not
right now.

Thanks all for the clarifications and sites. Here is my corrected list. I hope it is now correct, but I am sure there are still errors. So any corrections would be much appreciated.

I think I will break up section 8 into sub categories, just for my own clarification, but not until the snows fly. I have been cleaning up my Narcissus list as well as my tulip list too. Patti

What has helped me in the classification of my lilies is I've broken Divison VIII lilies into O/T Lilies, O/A Lilies, L/A Lilies and etc. You have quite a wonderful collection of lilies. Please post all their pictures next year.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I only took some photographs this summer and none since July 22nd, so there is a huge gap. But here is an album to view. Some may be labelled incorrectly and a few are missing names. I will repair it this winter. Enjoy. Patti

The Nine Divisions are still the same as they have been for decades according to the North American Lily Society. Division VIII was created when there were no entries. Who would have seen such an explosion in the interdivisonal crosses? test tube babies.

I would like to see the interdivisionals broken down. The orienpets alone are richly varied in color, shape and orientation.

Division VIII includes quite a few crosses at this time between the divisions:

LAs (longiflorum x asiatic)
TA (trumpet x asiatic)
OT (oriental x trumpet)
Marasians (martagon x asiatic)
LO (longiflorum x oriental)
asiapets (asiatic x trumpet)
longipets (longiflorum x trumpet)
OA (oriental x asiatic)

Some of these crosses are very vigorous hybrids like OTs & LAs, others are a bit more difficult to grow. Just more ways to empty my pocketbook.

Agawam, MA(Zone 6a)

Need help also, would like to know why OT Hybrids Lilies which are crosses between Oriental Lily & Trumpet Lily can be listed under Division 7 - Oriental Hybrids or Division 8 – Other Hybrids.
Examples are:
Alchemy – Listed as Division 8 – Other Hybrids
Anastasia - Listed as Division 8 – Other Hybrids

Black Beauty – Listed as Division 7 – Oriental Hybrid
Bonbini - Listed as Division 7 – Oriental Hybrid

Does it have to due when the lilies are registered?

Which are the lilies really?
