fruit flies

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

The fruit flies are horrible this year in my kitchen. Has anyone tried using the products they sell for them like from Gardener's Supply Company? What works best for you? I'm ready to go insane here.

I tried them They worked so-so.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Never tried them, Harper. Look forward to a good remedy posted here!!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yeah, me too Louise. Victor, have you tried anything else? What do you do now?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

For some reason, we never get a substantial case of fruit flies. We get pantry moths and Gardens Alive pantry traps work well. You may want to see if they a fruit fly trap.

Never had a problem with FF till this year.....they're terrible!!

So if it's not black flies it's fruit flies? lol

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Take a small glass jar - old dijon mustard jar here - pour in about 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar. Use a screwdriver or ice pick or something that will poke holes into the metal screw on lid and screw the top back onto the jar.

Fruit flies go in and never come out :)

If you don't have apple cider vinegar and only white vinegar, use that, but put a bit of honey in it.

Thanks Dea I have just the jar and a gallon of cider vinegar, lol.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

So Dea, your saying you actually attract more with vinegar than with honey. ;^)

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Thank you Dea!

It's not just Maine Mcgper1! It's NY too! Ugh, they're awful.

Yes, I use the cider vinegar too, just in an old plasic cup, about 1/4 - 1/2 cup, add a couple drops of dish detergent, and they go in and die. Works great.

(Warren)Lisbon Falls, ME(Zone 5a)

Woo Hoo I caught 10 already with the cider vinegar and just put it out this afternoon. Told my neighbor and she has her cup of vinegar out. We're seeing who catches the most....But boy I think I need a new hobby, LOL Maine the way life should be.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

pesky little devils those ff's - glad to see it worked :)

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yeah! Glad to see it worked! I wish I had been a little more patient. When no one had posted a remedy, I bought the traps from Gardener's Supply Company. They arrived today. I hope they kill 'em!

Columbus, OH

Zone 5, Columbus Oh The jar method has worked well for me. I use for bait fruit peels and vinegar. Don't let the jar sit overnight without emptying or some of the flies will escape.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

that's where the dish detergent helps, it kills them

(Warren)Lisbon Falls, ME(Zone 5a)

Yeah it does - those little suckers are floating at the bottom right now and I'm up to 35 already. Ahhhh what satisfaction no more chasing them with the vacuum cleaner, LOL
