Where do I find them?

(Zone 7a)

A little help somebody. I should know but I just don't...

1. Do ALL Portulaca make seed?

2. If so, where do I find them?

I have a beautiful one and I want to save the seeds if I can. This plant is different for me. The old flowers fall and fade...another pops right in it's place. I thought a pod was coming not another flower.

Thanks in Advance

Yes, Kim - they are located in the dried blooms after the petals have fallen off. The sites below show images you need.

I had a potted, hybrid portulaca that did not produce seed a couple of years ago. Not sure if this was from lack of pollination or the variety just did not produce seed. Kim, you might just want to try potting some up in a hanging pot and taking it indoors for the winter. Or, try starting from a cutting. I have not done either with portulaca, so have no actual experience to offer on propagation with it.

Thanks so much, This info from the both of you was very helpful. This is a hybrid (almost positive too pretty not to be) and it may not make seeds. I believe I see a little pod coming like the pictures from the google images. It may not come true from seed. I was thinking the very same thing about bringing it in. My husband was sitting on the porch and said to me this morning.."You need to bring that plant in the house!" And he knows nothing about plants...LOL

Kim, Mine started to develop the seed pods, but they aborted before sizing up and developing seeds. there are some really beautiful portulaca hybrids out there.

That's the one bad thing about hybrids...

Have you thought of taking cuttings??? Most portulaca are easy to root out, or are they patented?

My experience was a couple of years ago, patented and I did not take cuttings.

I don't know anything about patents or my penalties...LOL..LOL. But I root anything when I feel like it. Is that illegal???

Kim, it's ok with me - I root what ever I want for my own use.

LOL! LOL! Cracking up here...

Hey, Mother Nature routinely roots 'patented' plants - no questions asked and no permission needed - I do likewise - Mother Nature doesn't make mistakes nor does she appologize for what we humans see as her 'errors'!
