Ionian Sea (Ipomoea indica Corfu form x Tenerife Form)

Birmingham, United Kingdom

VASSUP Dger's!

4 years ago I went to Corfu and found a ipomoea indica, got a cutting and managed to keep it going by taking the root inside. I had tried numerous time to pollinate but it never happened, the blooms are about 2 inches across and have the purple hue.

I was given a plant of ipomoea indica ex Tenerife (Canary Islands) slightly more blue hue and flower size about the same.

I cross pollinated the two and here is the result, a giant floppy ipomoea indica with 3.5 inch floppy flowers that are hard to photograph because in the slighest breeze they move.and they are a lovely blue like the Ionian sea, here is the result

Interesting - interesting !

Ray, you can perhaps answer my question.
I crossed Greece some years ago and I remember bushes covered with blue flowers .
It was ipomoea indica?
I asked a Greek on a gardening site he could not answer me.

Hi

I have seen ipomoea indica in these parts of Greece; Zakynthos (Zante) Kefalonia and Corfu (resort of Kassiopi) and Ibiza (Spain)

My Greek form I got from outside a villa about a 45 minutes walk from the end of Kassiopi, turn left and keep walking by a stand of arundo donax!! (which I collected)

I have about 20 different forms but the trick is keep them bone dry over the winter, they are very shallow rooted and cut back to the main stem or you have a serious set back.

Finger's crossed I have a form ready to bloom tommorow with reddish blooms..

RSM - Interesting cross you got there! Is the tube shorter? The one I have looks similiar in color, but has a very long tube.

I am very interested to see your red blooming I. indica. Where did you acquire that one from?

Hi

We will have to see if what colour the bloom is, reddish purple I hope from the closed calyx but that will probably change.

I find ipomoea indica variable in form and structure it's only when you grow them together you seem to get seed

I will get laughed at I have trouble telling young ipomoea indica plant from ipomoea nil (wild forms)

indica will only cross with another indica that is not itself or cuttings from it self.

indica has to cross with a totally different indica to get seeds. here a few years ago we did get seeds when others sent others different plants.

I didn't know that! Well ... that might explain why my hand-pollinating isn't working on my lone vine. Thanks for bringing that up so that I can stop wasting my time trying ... lol
