Hey everyone, I have a problem with two of my young trees. One is Ginkgo biloba and the other is Zanthoxylum simulans. I grew both from seed in 2007, and planted them out later that year. The first winter the Zanthoxylum died back to within 4 inches of the ground, but the Ginkgo was fine. This past winter both trees died back to the ground; I thought they were dead at first, but they resprouted vigorously. They are now big and healthy once more, so I want to keep this damage from occurring again. On both plants the damaged areas were slightly shrunken/wrinkled, and the tissue beneath was soft and brown. This makes me think of sunscald, but the stems were killed entirely, instead of just one side. Could winter winds be the culprit? The trees had no shelter except wire cages.
Thanks!
James
Sunscald, or something else?
