Any know what this is?

It had made a web over the top of a bush in my back patio in Overland Park, KS (a suburb).

This indeed appears to be Argiope aurantia, which goes by a wide variety of common names, including golden garden spider - see http://tinyurl.com/nx7o67 and http://tinyurl.com/4qjtqt
