saving Salvia sclarea seeds

Bolivar, OH

Does anyone know a trick for getting the seeds out of the pods easier? I can hear them "rattle" when I gently shake the stems, but I still have to disect each and every pod to get my seeds...very time consuming not to mention the fact that S. sclarea is not the best smelling plant.

I don't have this type but I think all salvia could be harvested pretty much the same way.

On my annual salvia, I wait until most seeds on a stem are mature and black, then break off the entire stem. I trash the top part where the seeds are still white and save the bottom part where seeds are black. I take them into the house and let them dry for weeks (or months until I get around to it). I break up the stems a bit and place them into a large tupperware container with a snap on lid, shake vigorously. The seeds fall out and fall to the bottom.
