i remember planting them i think i grew these from seeds but not sure lol but i dont remember planting any bulbs

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

anyone?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Is that as far as it opens? How long is the bloom, and could you take a pic of the face of the flower?

Closest I can come is L. formosanum var. pricei, formosanum is supposed to be very easy from seed. Hope someone with some species knowledge comes along. Maybe someone call on Lefty?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

That's who I'm waiting on....... Oh Lefty, we need you!

Here's the pic that got me thinking. http://www.lilybulb.com/ls53.html

Have a look until Lefty gets here.

How old is the lily? How many blooms and how tall has it been in the past?

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

this is from this year and i grew it from seeds,i only see 2 blooms(so far) on each plant

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

There are actually several species that look almost identical; I doubt I could tell them apart. But all are quite rare, except for two: L. formosanum (common), and to a lesser extent, L. philippinense.

My educated guess is that yours is the regular L. formosanum. It is a very variable species, not even including its dwarf variety pricei. Tall ones easily grow 7 feet or more, while I have a clone that only grows around 4-5 feet, and still with a half dozen flowers per stem. The real variety pricei rarely produces more than three flowers, and usually only one or two. It would be unusual in your climate for a first year seedling of pricei to produce two flowers. In addition, the pic at Lilybulb.com is the first time I have ever seen var. pricei without definite dark striping on the petal backs. I suspect there has been some unintended crossing outside the variety to get that characteristic. Always, pricei has the dark striping, while the species formosanum is extremely variable: light or dark, brown or green. i think you will find that next season your lily will grow much taller. Formosanum will definitely be hardy in your zone, moretz.

leftwood and others
thanks so much for helping me out,i seen that the pricei had the pink markings and mine didnt so i couldnt figure out which one mine is,are the suppose to smell? mine dont have a smell unless if i have to wait until late evening,i havent smelled it in late evening,so you are saying since it was grown from seeds that it will be different next year? like being more taller and maybe having more blooms and maybe smells? etc? im glad to know that i dont have to bring it in lol,too much to bring in now heheheheheh, thxs again for helping me

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Yes, your flowers should definitely be fragrant. There should be a heavier fragrance in the evening, but it should be easily detectable throughout the day.

All of the different species that look similar to yours are fragrant.

Since it has been grown from seed, and this is its first year, it is not fully mature yet. Like any lily, it should increase in height, number of flowers, grow a larger bulb, etc. The fragrance may be muted the first season, but it's hard to believe you can't smell anything.

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

well i ll check this evening tha tis if i dont go anywhere because i havent been home in the evenings to see if it has a smell or not thxs again for all your help, youre good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you know your lilies thxs again

Morets, I have that species as Lilium longiflorum - I grew some from my own collected seed. They do grow big see pic!
Since there are experts around - Is there any way of distinguishing L. longiflorum from L. formosanum??

how long have you had ours? since you grew yours from seeds how long did it take to get a bloom that big? plmk and thxs

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

L. longiflorum does not have narrow, grass-like leaves like L. formosanum does. Longiflorum leaves are much wider and of more substance, especially the Nellie White cultivar, which virtually all Easter lilies in the floral market are. Also, you will find that longiflorums do not have the aspect of early buds as formosanum does, as shown in moretz's pic http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6942071 .

These are some of my L. formosanum, with L. philippinense in the back, still in bud. Notice the twisting of the flower tube, most noticeable in the flower facing right. This is also a common characteristic of formosanum (and maybe others too). I saw this in moretz's also.

i remembered to go see if mine smelled and they dont, are they suppose to? plmk and thxs

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

My formosums have a light scent, mostly detectable on newly opened blooms at night. During the day I don't detect it.

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

ok great thxs for lettimg me know ill have to check on this but no new blooms so might have to wait until next year to find out thxs again

The lily in post #---187 is 2 years old from seed.
I can get a flower from seed in c. 14 months but thet are much smaller. The photo is taken to accentuate the size!! - almost a trick camera angle with my wife's hand in the background. I
should get another 100 or so seed from this flower again this year!
Tnx for all the info - now I am fairly sure it is a L. longiflorum.

How do you get the seed to germinate? I have some seed pods from one of my lilies and was trying to find information on growing lilies from seed. Thanks for your help...I have Amaryllis and daylilies I have grown from seed, but this is my first lily to have seed pods, at least the first I have seen..lol

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Janet, they vary according to species or hybrid classification. L.formosum is probably the easiest to start from seed, and one of the quickest to bloom. Here's some basic info:

Here's some more in depth info:

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Cerahipp, even from just the flower, I am quite confident that yours in not formosanum.

Thanks Neal.
