This guy must have come in with the bird cage last night. It's about the size of a short wasp. Tiny little antenna, furry butt, no stinger. little white spots on either side of butt, moth like head, wings are black velvety with clear shiny cellophane spots. Flys somewhat clumsily like a cicada but this may because he's disoriented or sick. I live in Illinois near chicago.
CLOSED: What the heck is this?
This is a bee fly (Diptera: Bombyliidae), possibly the tiger bee fly, Xenox tigrinus - see http://tinyurl.com/lmo4vn for an image. These flies are parasites/parasitoids on the larvae of ground-nesting bees.
Cool Thanks!
I had one flying around the garden yesterday too, but thought it was a hornet until it landed and I got a look at it. I didn't have my camera handy and didn't get a photo though.
